Buxted has its own Parish Council, which also has local government responsibility for the neighbouring villages of High Hurstwood and Five Ash Down. The Council meets monthly (usually the second Tuesday of the month) and details of the meetings can be found on this website and on the notice board outside the Reading Room. Buxted parish is in the area served by Wealden District Council, which in turn comes under East Sussex County Council.
Know what your Parish Council does

Buxted Parish Council came into being in 1894 when the present system of Parish Councils was instituted to give rural communities a voice. We have records from that time recording many of the happenings and issues in the Parish. Parish Councils form the third tier of local government after County and District.

Buxted Parish covers some 7,000 acres with an electorate of about 2,500 out of a population of 3,200. It encompasses the villages of Buxted, High Hurstwood and Five Ash Down.

Know who your Parish Councillors are

The parish is divided into two wards - Buxted/Five Ash Down (10 councillors) and High Hurstwood (5 councillors). Councils are elected for a term of 4 years - currently running from May 2003 to May 2007.

Parish Council Meeting Agenda

The Parish Council Meeting Agenda will be posted in this section of our website approximately one week before the Parish Council Meeting.

Parish Council Meeting Minutes

Parish Council Meeting Minutes will be posted in this section of our website after having been formally signed off at the following Parish Council Meeting.

Responsibilities

In addition to attending the Parish Council Meetings, your Parish Councilors have additional  responsibilities for specific areas of the village's planning applications, and as Chairmen and representatives on various sub-committees both on the Parish Council, and on other local administrative bodies and organizations. Some of these are listed in this section.
